This beautiful Christmas song started as an untitled poem by Viktor Rydberg (1828-1895), with the first line forming the title above. It can also be called “Betlehems stjärna” (Bethlehem’s Star)).
In English, it’s often called “Shine over Lakes and Shores” — although I’ve found a poetic translation that offers “Starlight on Sea and Sand” as an evocative alternative!
I know of two melodies for Rydberg’s text, one by Alice Tegnér (1864-1943) and the other by Ivar Widéen (1871-1951). The latter is the one I’m playing here.
