The words to this beautiful song come from Edvard Evers (1852-1919), a Lutheran priest and hymnwriter who sadly never knew that his text would become a beloved classic. Just two years after his death, Gustaf Nordqvist (1886-1949) put Evers’ words to a new melody and published the song as a vocal solo with piano accompaniment.
In English, the title is often given as “Christmas, Christmas, Glorious Christmas”; here’s a lovely translation of the lyrics as well.
For my arrangement, I used a sparse approach in an attempt to capture the song’s simultaneous senses of melancholy and coziness – the perfect thing for this time of year, I think!
