Sound on 🎶 Today's tune speaks of light and warmth in our hearts and homes, and so when thinking about how to do this arrangement I found myself wanting to use the sound of one of my cats purring. I also couldn't decide if I wanted to write my harmony as a lower voice or a higher one, and resolved the question by doing both. I hope you find the results as sweet as I did! Sound on 🎶 Imagine an untitled poem so beautiful it inspired not just one but two composers to create achingly beautiful Christmas songs from its text, and you'd have Ivar Widéen and Alice Tegnér's reaction to these words by Viktor Rydberg. The title taken from the first line is often translated as "Shine over Lakes and Shores," although this one is also known as "Betlehems stjärna" (Bethlehem's Star). Whatever you call it, I hope you fall in love with it just as much as I have. Sound on 🎶 This week's Swedish tune for Advent tells the story of a humble stable boy standing up to the powerful Herod. It's a theme that has captured the imaginations of many; similar ballads recounting the martyrdom of St. Stephen are found abroad and going back centuries (see especially Child 22 & Roud 3963). In Sweden, this haunting song is associated with Lucia celebrations and goes by many names, including Ut Kommer Staffan, Staffansvisan från Vittskövle, and Vittskövlevisan. (All this is not to be confused with the better-known Staffansvisan/Staffan Stalledräng!) Whatever you call it, I hope you enjoy my little version, which draws on a harp ostinato efter Rüdiger Oppermann and taught to me by my wonderful harp teacher @teacupsfadaze. Sound on 🎶 I was asking myself how I could bring a sense of specialness to the holidays this year and the thought came to me: what if I arranged and recorded Christmas songs from Sweden? And more than this, what if I made the sheet music available to my friends so they could enjoy playing these beautiful melodies too? Today's video is the start of a series of five such gifts. "Mitt Hjerte Alltid Vanker" is a border-crossing tune, a traditional Swedish melody from 1816 paired with the lyrics to a Norwegian hymn from a century earlier. I know it from Rolf Lislevand's wonderful album "Jul i Gammel Tid," and after decorating my Christmas tree for years while listening to his playing, the haunting opening notes of this tune will probably always sound like the beginning of Advent to me. Studio Recitals

My students participate in "virtual recitals" twice a year - so you don't have to add Yet Another Thing to your busy schedule. We record our songs, listen thoughtfully, and then refine what we hear until we're satisfied. Then we release our tracks online (complete with artist statements!) in order to share our music with friends & family, both near and far. You can listen to us here:
